Early Career Researcher Programs

PhD Symposium

The PhD symposium will consist of two short talks by our guest panalists Johannes Mahr (York University, Canada) and Lucia Melloni (Ruhr University Bochum). They will give you insight into interdisciplinary research, differences between academic systems and the trials and tribulations of an academic career. The talks will be follwed by a panel discussion where you will be given the opportunity to decide on the direction of the conversation.

We will also arrange other activities so you can get to know your peers and their research.

Take advantage of this unique experience by signing up when you register for the main conference. The PhD symposium takes place on the morning of June 2nd 2025. Space is limited and will be assigned on a first come first serve basis.

Fireside Chat

Our goal is to provide junior female scientists with the opportunity to network with prominent female researchers from the field of episodic memory in an intimate atmosphere. Amoung our invited guests are our keynote speakers Ali Boyle (LSE) and  Iris Engelhard (Utrecht University)
It will take place on the RUB campus.

Sign up when you register for the main conference. The fireside chat takes place immediately after the conclusion of GEM 2025 on June 4th ca. 13:30 - 15:30. Lunch is included. Space is limited and will be given out on a first come first serve basis.

Financial Support

Although with rising costs our budget appears to have shrunk, we want to continue to provide support to early career researchers. This year we offer 3 travel awards to attend GEM 2025.

What is included: If you are chosen to receive this funding we will provide you with two nights accommodation (breakfast included) and up to 300 Euro of your travel costs (restrictions apply) will be reimbursed.

Please note that we can only reimburse travel costs via bank transfer and cannot pay them in cash or by check. We will not be held responsible for any fees that your bank levies or fluctuations in exchange rates.

Application process: To apply please fill in the application form and send it via email to for2812+gem@rub.de by 30.03.2025

Eligibility: Early career researchers are defined as PhD students and postdoctoral fellows. Preference will be given to researchers whose abstracts are accepted for a talk (and then posters). Applicants must claim a need for financial support.

The research unit FOR 2812 "Constructing scenarios of the past: A new framework in episodic memory" is a project funded by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG). The research unit studies the cognitive and neuronal mechanisms underlying scenario construction in episodic memory. We employ and integrate approaches from Philosophy, Psychology, and Experimental and Computational Neuroscience.
